Waves of Isolation

I heard lonely horns and the rumble of passing trains
Though they were too far away
Just visiting ghosts and memories

I stood yesterday in a bustling market
I couldn’t understand or pull a word from the air
Not one that was meant for me

I tumbled in waves of isolation
Lifted suddenly,
Then dashed to sands

At the start I was anxious grasping...
Until I resigned, and
Just let it
Rumble
bustle, and
tumble

Just about out of my mind from...

This
Insidious,
Nagging,
Non-relenting,
Internally slithering,
Tediously
Unceasing
Ssssssssssssss...

the thrushes' game

I cut away that piece and
tossed it behind me
because it hurt like hell
when they would
twit and scritch and
pick while it
took ragged breaths
and beat and bled but
sometimes
I can still hear them
poking and pecking
at it and
I guess
it makes them feel
brave or
victorious over
its dead flesh even
though tossing gangrenous
gristle about
seems a sick
and bitter
game but the
hermitage insists that
it's part of her healing process so
I hope they will
finish it now so
all their flittering and
tittering can finally fade to
nothing

Early commuters
chase time, wet lines; while her hand
rests here on my ribs.

Leaving One

Has the horizon yet released
that one
who promised to walk five hundred,
and then five hundred miles more?
Do you suppose the drifting sand has hidden
this one
who, with promises, had sat down beside?
No, more likely,
wandering winds, and
thieving tides
have taken that one
and this one
leaving...
one.

A Blessing for Pets...

(© Jan L. Richardson. janrichardson.com)
Katharine (Katy) von Bora Luther Kaurin

Blessing the Animals

You who created them
and called them good:
bless again these creatures
who come to us
as a blessing
fashioned of fur
or feather
or fin,
formed of flesh
that breathes with
your own breath,
that you have made
from sheer delight,
that you have given
in dazzling variety.

Bless them
who curl themselves
around our hearts
who twine themselves
through our days
who companion us
in our labor
who call us
to come and play.

Bless them
who will never be
entirely tamed
and so remind us
that you love
what is wild,
that you rejoice
in what lives close
to the earth,
that your heart beats
in the heart of these creatures
you have entrusted
to our care.

In memory of Zeke, who always won our battles over who had ownership of my drafting table.

God Sent a Friend

When my anxiety nit-picks or
My brow is beaten and
Worried over work
When I'm slumped in my sofa or
Tired of the tedium and
Parenting little people

She says something
Bawdy and bodacious or
Sweet and sensitive

I simply cannot stay in
My sad state instead
My lips peel back in a
Silent smile or a sudden
Burst of bubbling laughter

God sent a friend

Selene

Selene
     Tonight you glow
          in full radiance
     I see your dance
          in the gleam
               of a young woman's eye

Diane
     Your wildness
          fills this night
          and fires a renewed pulse
          in me

Muses
Your dance and music and poems
     Overwhelm my heart and
     Fill my head but...

My thick tongue
      Poor art and
      Awkward gestures
           are silenced as
       Her hand folds gently
           into mine

Life Fell

Life fell from the sky last night
One flake nestled into my open palm
I barely noticed her beauty
Before she melted from sight

Grandpa Bob

He lifted the small pup --
          tail wagging,
          tongue licking
     -- to his lap;

Cooed in the floppy ear,
          "silly thing,
          hush now,"
     calming words.

His wife's voice chirped
          in the background
          to the company.
     He smiled secrets
          into the soft, brown eyes
               now settled in his lap.

After gazing silently
          around the room
          at children, grandchildren,
          spouse, and snoozing pug,
      he lowered his head,
                    closed his eyes,
           hand resting on soft fur.

His breath eased,
           and gently drifted away.

Which Are You?

Monkeys are grumpy, funky, and stompy.
They yell louder than a ROAR!
Their favorite treat is bananas.
And there's much, much more.
Do you think animals are smart?
Well, how can an elephant do art?
Which are you? An animal, or two?
And this question goes to you!

Your Apart-from-me Life

Go on
Your apart-from-me life where
I'm sure you'll find the sun
Rises every day
Apart from me

Apart from me are
Reasons to laugh or cry
With joys and aches
And I'm sure there will be arms
And hands and
Soft warm assuring voices in your
Apart-from-me life

Apart from me
And my random thoughts

Apart from my hopes
And hearing about your day
And your dreams
And watching your eyes
And flitting hands

Apart from my side
And walks on the beach
And your cold fingers folded
Into mine
And your cheek resting
Lightly
On my shoulder

Apart from all that --
You'll breath
And walk in your
Apart-from-me life

You have
A part from me
With your
Apart-from-me life
-- And that's okay
Because
It's yours
It's yours now and --
I never wanted it back

So
Go on
Apart from me and
Live.

singles, couples, and combos

i carry my number six combo
to a quiet corner.

while bee gees twitter
late seventies,
couples and families
murmur, and
pink tops imitate granite.

singles eating silently
overhear all, and stare
at eggshell shakers.

Macaroni - by Mac

My guest poet is back --

Macaroni is a really
sweet treat;

It's so yummy, it
goes to your feet!

Tell the Boys...

Yes, I'll tell them for you
Because they need to know
And I will tell them
Because from the time
You first you held them
I felt held, too.

I know, now, that I wasn't
And you weren't.
That hits. That hurts, but...

I tell them anyway
Because - still -
When you miss them
Or love them
Or send them kisses,
I do, too.
So, I will tell them
Because they need to know.

the craft of the father

Pray God you can cope
I stand outside this woman's work
This woman's world
Oh, it's hard on the man
Now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the father

At Low Tide

I walk over crackling shells and loose pebbles
and step carefully across sand and suckling mud

To stand as close as I dare
to these waters
of von Geldern Cove.

Having looked at a map, I know that
--if I could peer through the grayness
in front of me--
I'd see the north tip of Fox Island
and Green Point.

Instead, I'm satisfied
standing and listening to patting on my head
from rain
that drips off the back of my ears
and soaks my sweater.

A pair of gulls tease and dance.
He, with his white body and
patterned wings flies above,
swoops below,
and for awhile calls alongside.
He drops down on dark sand, but
she flies on,
and we stand in the rain, on this shoreline,
contemplating our losses.

The tide has turned some time ago
already inching toward my toes.
I know it's silly and incongruous, but
I hear a song
from a Kevin Bacon movie
(of all things) playing in my mind;
you know, when he's in a waiting room,
...not knowing: "Pray God you can cope..."

It's a sad song, especially right now.
But I close my eyes and listen to Kate sing
that refrain again:
"I know you have a little life in you yet."

I let raindrops fall on my face,
and against my teeth.
My feet sink an inch more
under sand and water, and
it occurs to me how very wet I'll be
if I stay here ...just an
hour or two more...
over my head, really.

"I know you've got a lot of strength left."
So, pulling my feet out, I turn from cove, gull, and gray
to the wall, to the stairs,
and I climb.

Warmer Days...

Ice lays hard, unwelcome to flesh.
Only let warmer winds blow; immediately the surface must soften, melt.
Frozen crystals--sharp, jagged to their endings--finally dissipate.
Then, you warm and joyful bodies: dive deep.

I am that

I am that.
I did that.
Accuse me. It's true:
Misplaced and misused anger.
Spite. Vengeance.
Rage.
Fear.
Obsession.
Yes.

Do I crave approval?
Do I fear failure and avoid rejection?
I am that.
I did that.

Lustful.
Arrogant.
Foolish.
Clinging and
Blind.
Yes.

Dig deeper, though, and
Maybe you'll find--
Driving that search for approval--
I simply want to love
And to be loved.
That under my
Angry, spiteful, and vengeful sneer
Is confusion, twisted and turned out
In this strange maze.
And an aching emptiness.

That, I am.

No. You can't fill it.
Except when you smile.
When you take my hand deep into yours.
When you thank me.
When you tell me you believe in me.
I am filled by you, by me,
And by someone bigger,
In stages, or
By nature or gift, and always
Through redemption.

You can also accuse me of this:
Patient.
Understanding,
(I get it.)
I am listening
With mind and heart.
I am encouraging
And forgiving
(How can I not be?)

I am:
Full of humor, pride, strength, and
Victorious optimism
(Most of the time).

I am:
Hungry, always hungry,
Wanting to taste
More of life,
More of joy,
More of you.

I am:
Still easily fooled,
But not foolish.
I still fear,
But I am not afraid.
I have looked up, and
Climbed out from mazes.
But more than that,
I stand on
Forgiveness and
Grace.

He did that, and
I am this.
All of it.

New Message

Fluttering against the dark
A dim amber light is splashing
Up the wall, across the bookcase
Against our ceiling.
In pulses,
That silent heartbeat is
Letting my sleeping love know that
She has a new message.
New message.

New message.

New message.

New...

It stops.
But in its place
Shadows return
Silently seeping
Through my eyes,
Into my ears
To pool thickly
At the back of my tongue
Where they drip steadily down my esophagus
Slowly filling every cavity in my chest;
Suffocating.

At last I hear
The distant chime of the clock
From the hall and down the stairs.
I count them, each chime...
Three, four, five.
My chest relaxes,
I breathe in.
Eight, nine,
My tongue loosens...

Twelve.

After a polite pause, I
Clear my throat by quietly croaking
Into the murky dark,
I love you.

She stirs softly just as
The amber light blinks again to say
That there is a new message.
New message.

New message.

New message.

New.
